Big News on Capitol Hill Yesterday: Sotomayor, Rove, and the Detainees

     The confirmation hearing for Judge Sonia Sotomayor will kick off next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Karl Rove testified before the House Judiciary Committee, and the Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on proposed amendments to the Military Commissions Act.

Guantanamo Military Judge Throws Out Confession Obtained by Torture

     The Miami Herald reports that Col. Stephen Henley, a military judge at Guantanamo, has thrown out a confession that Afghan authorities obtained from Mohammed Jawad.  Jawad is charged with the commission of a war crime for allegedly having thrown a grenade and wounding American soldiers in an Afghan bazaar in 2002.  There was evidence [...]
