Davis looks to bounce back

Mary Cay Kabot of the Plain Dealer writes that inside linebacker Andra Davis is looking to bounce back from an off season.
The problem? It's been more than just one off season for Davis. He just doesn't seem to be a natural fit for the 3-4. Davis handled the off year admirably and got his pay cut significantly. Too bad this can't happen with more players.

Why 'too bad' that more players can't have their pay cut? That's a strange thing to write.

I just think it would be a good thing if players had performance-based contracts. If you suck, you don't earn as much, and vice versa.

They do have performance based contracts. That's why Brett Favre made a lot more money than Charlie Frye.

I think my reply was vague. I mean ones that can be adjusted year-to-year based on performance.

Athletes' compensation is already much more dependent on performance than most professionals and that's doubly true in the NFL, where the longterm contracts don't mean much.
I guess I can see some point if you're talking about salary caps, etc., but most workers wouldn't be too happy if their salary was adjusted, publicly, in a major way after the yearly performance review with their boss.
Why fans would take pleasure in seeing someone's pay cut mystifies me.

first let say this….. if a player finds a team that is willing to pay him a million dollars a years …good for him.
if he made fifty thousand a year after 30 years it would only be 1.5 mill. they are way over paid, and it takes a whole organization to win a championship, not just the player who made the tackle or caught the ball. they are rediculously over paid (here again good for them). they should however put restrictions on what a first round rookie, second round ect, rookies can and must be paid and end all this hold out bull. and if a player holds out because he don't like his job or money,he must give back that equall part of his signing bonus plus penalties and wages, and yes it should cost him, hid did put his name on the paper, and his agent should not be left out there to keep collecting money whitout him having to be accountable it all this. by the way why is it that when a athelete, or ceo rips off the populusfor these enormus pay, its good however your local factory worker, or grocery store employee makes say decnt wage with bene and retirement the talk is union labor cost are too high, ask about and read about what it was like, maybe you should be paid for what your worth in someones elese eye.
