Crennel needs miracle to keep job

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

In other news, it's cold outside. I mostly just wanted to forget about today's game. So, here is this story.

Among the notes in it, the Browns could be looking at a Schottenheimer. But could it be young Brian Schottenheimer, the Jets' offensive coordinator? Boy, I hope not. Here is who the article lists as a possible Crennel replacement:

Among the names topping a possible candidate list: Bill Cowher, Marty Scottenheimer, and coordinators like the Jets' Brian Schottenheimer, the Giants' Steve Spagnuolo, the Titans' Jim Schwartz, the Falcons' Mike Mularkey and the Ravens' Rex Ryan.

Ply your bets in the comments on who you think will be the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Colts at Browns live chat/blog

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Welcome, Browns fan, to this week's chat. It is set to begin at 12:45 p.m. More notes to come throughout the morning.

Injuries of note: The Colts are without center Jeff Saturday and safety Bob Sanders. Linebacker Gary Brackett is questionable. The Browns list Lawrence Vickers, Kellen Winslow and Shaun Smith as questionable. Jerome Harrison, Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams are probable.

In a move that mostly went unnoticed, the Browns waived Steve Sanders and picked up rush linebacker Titus Brown.

Could the immortal Ken Dorsey see the field today?

Prediction: This one is going to be ugly. Colt 31, Browns 10
'Stonehands' Edwards dropped catch prediction: 3

Romeo's indecisiveness with quarterbacks

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Marla Ridenour ran a story yesterday in which Browns head coach Romeo Crennel has proclaimed Brady Quinn his starter in 2009.  In the article, Crennel proclaims that whatever Derek Anderson does over the next five games, he's not the Browns starter in 2009.  Making things even more complicated, he says that Anderson could even make next year's squad as a backup.  Anyone else just get a cold shiver up their spine and think of Tim Couch vs Kelly Holcomb?

Reviewing Crennel's history with quarterbacks, this is just another twist down the road.  For all his faults, Crennel may have lost his job on any other team for his handling of the quarterback position during his time as the Brows head coach.

2005

July/August – Names Trent Dilfer the starter. Dilfer was to remain the starter throughout the season while the team groomed third round pick and local hero Charlie Frye.

November – Frye named starter in Week 13 after Dilfer struggled the previous few games.

2006

April – Names Frye the starter for the 2006 season after a strong showing to end the season.

May – Dilfer is traded to the San Francisco 49ers, rather controversially, for Ken Dorsey.

December – Frye hurts his wrist in a game against the Chiefs.  Anderson takes over, and leads the team to an overtime victory.  After Anderson becomes injured, Crennel waffles on whether to start an injured Frye or healthy but ineffective Dorsey in Week 17 against the Texans.  He settles on Frye.

2007

April – General manager Phil Savage drafts Brady Quinn in the first round of the draft, trading back into the first to select the Notre Dame quarterback.

July – Training camp begins with an open competition for the starting quarterback job.  Quinn is holding out, at this point.

August – Crennel "flips a coin" to determine the starter for the first preseason game, which ends up being Frye.  Anderson then starts the second game.

September – In Week 1, Frye, who had been named the starter at the end of preseason, is pulled.  Anderson takes over, and goes to a Pro Bowl season.  Frye is traded two days after being pulled to Seattle for a late round pick.

2008

February – Anderson is resigned on the eve of free agency to a three year contract.

November – After a terrible loss in Baltimore, the Crennel names Brady Quinn the starter, replacing Anderson.  Quinn starts three games, before being pulled against the Texans due to an injured finger.  His season ends, being put on injured reserve on 11/25/08.  Crennel names Anderson the starter for the remainder of the season, but that Quinn will be the starter for the 2009 season.

Summary:  Dilfer lost his job to Frye.  Frye becomes injured, and loses his job to Anderson.  Anderson then gets hurt, and hands the job back to Frye.  Quinn is drafted, and it causes a race for the starting job, which Frye wins, but not without ups and downs in preseason.  Frye gets benched, loses his job to Anderson, and gets traded to Seattle.  Anderson goes to the Pro Bowl, signs a big contract extension.  Then he loses his job to Quinn, who breaks a finger and gets benched.  Anderson gets to start five games (well, you never know what could happen), but will only be a backup if he returns in 2009.

Finding thanks as a Browns fan

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

So, you're a Browns fan who lets the Browns' terrible play bother you. What's the point of being a Browns fan?

Well, just be thankful you're not a Detroit Lions fan. The Browns may stink in primetime, but stinking during the Thanksgiving day game before everyone falls asleep? That's a whole new level of awful we may never have to live with.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! We'll have a live chat going on Sunday, starting at 12:45 p.m. Join the fun. Talk leftovers.

Update: The Bulletin's Cincinnati bureau checked in today with an e-mail that should cause more thanks. At least you're not a Bengals fan and have to deal with receiver Chad Johnson. You know, he of the multi-year, mulit-million dollar contract. "Ocho Stinko" decided to get in on the Black Friday bonanza:

Johnson wasn't the only superstar out early on Black Friday. I was out at Best Buy and shot this video.

Quinn out rest of season

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, quarterback Brady Quinn will miss the rest of the season due to a broken right index finger he suffered Nov. 17 at Buffalo.

Quinn elected to play Sunday against Houston, which reportedly caused the injury to worsen.

Team sources said that Quinn and the team made the decision together earlier today. Sources say that not only has the break in his right index finger worsened, but it is also starting to injure the tendons as well.

For the season, Quinn was 45 for 89 passing for 518 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The Browns were 1-2 in the three games Quinn started.

Derek Anderson will start Sunday against the 7-4 Indianapolis Colts.

Mr. Lerner speaks

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Amidst a season of crisis, Randy Lerner has finally spoken.  He has said no major changes are coming until January.  Those of you who placed a bet this week on Romeo's fate will likely have to pay up when you see your family on Thanksgiving.

On top of that, he states no passes have been made at former Steelers head coach and current CBS Analyst Bill Cowher.   Again, pay up your bets folks.

Marty Schottenheimer?  He's done with the NFL.

Lastly, head coach Romeo Crennel has said that Brady Quinn will start against the Colts this Sunday.  If you are playing along with me, you owe someone money for some of these random bets.

My take on it all:

Randy Lerner has been absent this year amidst other issues.  It's nice to see him pipe up on the matter, but it seems a bit too late.  When your owner (allegedly) has not seen a game in person this year, how well of a grasp does he have on the issues at hand?

As far as Cowher goes, this is an issue that Browns need to drop, at least for now.  He's loyal to the Rooney family, and lives much more stress-free existence working for CBS.  That train is never leaving the station.

Marty?  Would be a great story, but it's not going to happen.

As far as Quinn goes…it feels like he will facing an uphill battle for the rest of the season with his finger, and a potentially lame-duck coach.  Crennel has gone to the bench once for Derek Anderson, it will just get easier from here.

What they're saying today

Monday, November 24th, 2008

- Akron Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Brutal Browns loss can't be defended

- Akron Beacon Journal (Marla Ridenour): Edwards wants fans to know he's trying

- Akron Beacon Journal (Stephanie Storm): Late benching catches Quinn by surprise

- Chronicle-Telegram (Brian Dulik): Shake up the Browns? Why bother? This season is a lost cause

- Houston Chronicle (Jerome Solomon): Texans demonstrate they haven’t given up on season or Kubiak

- Houston Chronicle (Lance Zierlein): Texans game ball goes to…. you'll never guess

- Orange and Brown Report (Rich Passan): That's It; That's Enough

- Plain Dealer (Bud Shaw):An abysmal loss seals Crennel's fate, but he can't be Browns' lone fall guy

- Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Plenty of culprits for this stinker

- What I'm saying today:
Romeo Crennel should be fired. Not at the end of the season. Not at the end of the week. Today. Football fans tend to think irrationally after a bad beat, but the Browns systematically broke down and gave up on Sunday. Crennel clearly doesn't have the ability to be an NFL head coach.

A quick glance at the lowlights:

- The quarterback of the future gets benched for a guy who couldn't keep his job.
- Your sure-handed running back has two fumbles.
- Your All Pro left tackle has two penalties.
- The Pro Bowl wide receiver drops four more passes (the tracker will be updated later today).
- Arguably the best player on the team, Kellen Winslow, got his only catch with three minutes remaining in the game.
- The fans chant for a coach who was the leader of the rival team for 15 years.
- The offensive coordinator, who looked like a surefire future head coach following last season, abandons the running game when it's successful and calls several plays for Stonehands Edwards.
- The biggest cheer of the second half? Penalties on the Texans.

There are several more. Share one if you have it. Let your frustration out here at the Bulletin.

There were actually some highlight, as crazy as that sounds.

- Jamal Lewis ran very well, going for a 5.8 clip. Sadly, he only got 10 carries.
- Kamierion Wimbley had his best game of the season.
- Phil Dawson and Shaun Rogers look like Pro Bowl players.
- I had a delicious steak after the game.

Hello, Browns fan. Today's live chat begins at 12:45 p.m. Just hit the play button in the middle of the chat box and hop in.

In the mean time, check out this freaky Browns video from the 80s, starring our Brownies, the Michael Stanley Band, a live bear and … Tiny Tim! God, the 1980s were so awesome.

Live blog this Sunday

Friday, November 21st, 2008

We'll once again be holding a live blog for the Browns game on Sunday. With the game set to start at 1 p.m. against the Texans, the live blog will go live at about 12:45. Stop by, give a prediction and hang around as we cheer on the Browns.

What, you were looking for Phil Savage talk? OK, here goes:

- It was stupid
- He should not be fired
- He should be fined
- Admit it, you've said worse to your detractors

Brady Quinn's broken fingertip is more concerning than Savage dropping an F-bomb.

Savage (supposedly) gives fan written middle finger

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I usually try and stay from it, but I saw this yesterday on Deadspin and couldn't resist mentioning it.

Basically, a fan e-mails Savage complaining how the team doesn't play the right players, the coaches are no good, etc. You know, the usual fan complaints that tell Savage he's doing a terrible job.

Savage's (alleged) response?

Go root for Buffalo-f#@* you-

Well then. While Savage has a right to be upset about always getting crushed by people, this seems like a poor way to convey his displeasure. Yes, the team is much better than it was in previous years thanks to Savage, but he needs to let this stuff roll of his back.

Now, I'm actually taking this somewhat lightly, hence the "supposed" and "alleged" lines. Anyone can make a fake e-mail these days and pass it off as reality. If nothing else, this makes for cheap blogger fodder.
