Anderson on the Jets' radar
Posted February 12th, 2009 by Luke Chandler
Per Adam Schefter, if the New York Jets make a trade for a quarterback, it will be for the Browns' Derek Anderson.
If the Jets decide to trade for a quarterback, the most logical one is Cleveland’s Derek Anderson. For starters, Anderson has the most attractive contractual situation of any veteran quarterback. He is due a $5 million roster bonus on the 15th day of the league year, which is about a month from now. He signed a three-year, $24.5 million deal last year and still has two seasons remaining on it.
Beyond the contract are the relationships. Browns coach Eric Mangini and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum have enough of a relationship that the two men could work out a deal. Also, Jets coach Rex Ryan worked with Anderson in Baltimore before the Ravens released the QB.
With Brett Favre again dabbling in retirement, it gives the Browns another possible trade partner should they choose to move Anderson. The pieces could fit together.
The Jets, with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, run the same basic offensive system as the Browns. New Jets head coach Rex Ryan was a member of the Baltimore Ravens staff when they drafted him in 2005, so he is familiar with Anderson. I may be making myself feel better, but there is at least one other writer out there who agrees with me.
Notes…
In other news, the Browns have added George McDonald to their coaching staff as the offensive quality control coach. If you don't know an offensive quality control coach does, read this description.
Could the Browns be interested in bringing in USC linebacker Clay Matthews? He recently met with the Browns, and there could be interest on the team's part. Mel Kiper tends to think that the Browns should be interested in Matthews, should they trade back in to the twenties.
Rumors of Braylon Edwards being moved to the New York Giants are picking up steam.
The Browns will not be raising ticket prices for the 2009 season.
Tony Grossi has done a good job breaking down the Browns offensive and defensive free agents.

For the love of pete, please trade Anderson and end this ongoing potential quarterback derby. It's lasted too long already. Cleveland fans want Brady Quinn at QB, pure and simple, and will boo Derek's butt off the field every chance we get.
Mangini, make this your first wise decision. Pick up some talent or draft picks for the interception king (New Yorkers are used to that, after a season of Favre), and let's get a head start at putting together an offense with Quinn.

Everyone is assuming that IF we trade DA, it will be for a draft pick(s). What people outside NFL front offices aren't realizing is that this year's draft is different from any other in recent memory… It is the last draft before a potentially uncapped year. What that means is that teams are stockpiling draft picks to acquire young players who can sign long term contracts so that teams won't have to negotiate contracts with a lot of players during an uncapped year. Teams are treating their draft picks like GOLD this year. So that significantly decreases the liklihood of the Browns getting picks for DA. Instead, don't be surprised to see a player-for-player trade, especially considering all the holes we have to fill. Do the Jets have any players Mangini would like? You bet. I just can't wait to see the blasting Mangini and Kokinis will get when they don't get picks for DA. Cleveland is gonna flip.

"Rumors of Braylon Edwards being moved to the New York Giants are picking up steam." really??? one name drop by a beat writer is enough for that line? not even an "unnamed source" these days? this is not reporting.

It has been reported on this blog previously, mike.

Go after Clay Mathews if he plays anything like his father did – Cleveland fans will love him!

I say out with the old and in with the new. I think I said that before, so I'm stickin to it. I saw DA in the Pro Bowl, what a site that was. Too low to this guy, over this guy's head ? I'm thinkin, what the Hell is he doin here, The Pro Bowl !! Get Edwards out of here, too much talent out there that can catch a ball….

Let Braylon go. Larry Fitzgerald forgot more about catching a football than Braylon will ever know. Maybe Braylon and Plaxico can target shoot together.

Why do the Brown keep unloading the wrong Qb? Will they never learn? Answer: Goes without saying.

Abdul — Are you saying the Browns should keep DA and move Quinn. You must be Kidding, right?

1) don't folks realize that even if the decision was made to go with BQ, announcing it now would most likely lessen what we can get in return in a trade? it seems to me that we'd be in a stronger bargaining condition if teams are contacting us, rather having us calling everyone to see if they want DA.
2) ditto for BE & KW2 – and if we're going to move somebody, a damaged TE who is a potential contract holdout is more expendable than a legit deep threat WR.
3) clay jr. would be a nice "feel good" story, but i'd prefer getting whoever will be the best fit for whatever scheme we choose to embrace. any of the USC LBs would look good, though if mangini decides a center upgrade is a must have like he did in NY and they drafted mangold, mack is the only legit center who is also big enough to match up with the NTs in out division, and would require trading down to get him where it wouldn't be a stretch. if we could trade our #5 and turn that into mack and a USC LB, i'd be pretty pleased.

John,
Abdul is right. Give D.A one more year and if he crashes again….get another Qb. Brady is not the answer.

A reasonable exchange for DA would be to Tampa for a two, three and Brian Griese, the type of limited-arm vet QB who should make an excellent mentor and backup for Brady Quinn. Adding two much-needed selections in that range could go a long way toward repairing a frightening defense, while allowing the organization an opportunity to prioritize with its own earlier picks.
With the uncapped year in 2010, look for the Browns to take on some older, declining and expensive pacts in return for marginal expendables—the type of transactions that normally would make little sense, but permit Cleve to import seasoned leadership, quality men and players, and accomplished professionals onto a roster in need of all those qualities. The absence of such stabilizing influences had a lot to do with how last season spiraled long before it needed to.

Very nice NY Jets information. I hope to be in NYC for a game this fall.
