Rogers wants out following Pro Bowl year

Posted February 25th, 2009 by Dan

4:30 UPDATE: According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, Rogers' agent has met with the Browns. He wouldn't reveal much, but said "there are no financial or contract concerns on our behalf."

Following a Pro Bowl 2008 season, defensive tackle Shaun Rogers reportedly wants out.

That is according to a Tuesday night report from Adam Schefter of the NFL Network. Schefter reports that Rogers despises new head coach Eric Mangini so much that he told the organization not to pay him a $6 million roster bonus due next month and to release him.

Should the Browns release Rogers, it would cause a $9.7 million hit against the team's salary cap. But according to Schefter's source, the Browns have no intention of releasing Rogers.

Rogers is reportedly upset after Mangini failed to acknowledge him during two offseason functions.

The source told Schefter that Mangini remains optimistic that he can change Rogers' mind. Mangini had to deal with a similar situation when he was coach of the New York Jets. Wide receiver Laveranues Coles was a initially skeptical of Mangini, but the two eventually bonded.

The Browns traded a third-round pick and cornerback Leigh Bodden to the Detroit Lions to acquire Rogers prior to the 2008 season. Rogers finished the year with 76 tackles and 4.5 sacks, which secured him his third Pro Bowl invitation.

In 2006, Rogers was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Should the Browns release or trade Shaun Rogers?

  1. Ed Haas Says:

Okay, I know Shaun Rogers is a whiny, but talented player, who could use some of Mangini's discipline, but Mangini needs to be more pro-active regarding those few on the roster who DO have a shred of talent.

  2. Linda Lewis Says:

Well it figures. Everytime a player is named Player of the Year for the Akron Browns Backers Banquet – the player ends up not playing for Cleveland or is cut or injured or whatever. Shaun like Kellen needs to grow up and live in the real world and not take things so seriously.

    Linda

  3. Luke Chandler Says:

This is the Shaun Rogers that Detroit fans know all about. The one who has huge talent but then complains when things aren't exactly his way.

  4. terje Says:

    i second ed.

bill belichick would be a social pariah if not for his rings. the guy is a scumbag. mangini wants to be a belichick but has no cred as a head coach. eric should have put on the chapstick and started kissing the broad behind of rogers as soon as possible. tempermental talent or not—at least rogers actually has talent unlike most of the defensive roster.

  5. JulioFranco Says:

    Ah yes!

The first evidence of what we knew all along. That many of the players prefer a coach like Crennel who is their "buddy" and coddles them, even though the team knows nothing about winning and success.

I say switch those player salary structures around, into something meaningful.

    As in:

    Base Salaries (maximums)
$200K for all 1st year players
$250K for all 2nd year players
$350K for all 3d year players
$500K for all 4th year players
$750K for all 5th year players
$1.0M for all 6th year players
$1.3M for all 7th year players
$1.7M for all 8th year players
$2.3M for all 9th year players
$3.0M for all 10th year players
$5.0M for all 11+ year players

In addition to salaries, establish team bonus metrics.

If team wins 50% of regular season games, all players receive an added 20% bonus.

If team makes playoffs, all players receive a total of 50% bonus.

If team wins wild card game, all players receive a total of 60% bonus.

If team wins conference semifinal game, all players receive a total of 80% bonus.

If team wins conference championship, all players receive a total of 100% bonus.

If team wins Super Bowl, all players receive a total of 150% bonus.

This is all predicated on years of service and TEAM success.

And if a player demands a trade to a contender in order to maximize his bonus, he will lose 50% of his years of service and all of his bonus for the first 3 years playing for teams other than his original team. Optionally, the team may choose to keep the player. If the player refuses to play, the team receives a supplemental draft choice at the end of the round corresponding to the round the player was drafted in. If the player plays, but is deemed to be dogging it, he can be traded with the same results noted immediately above.

Most jobs I know of have salary and wage ranges. Why not pro sports?

The numbers can be changed, but the concept is what is important here.

Hello Shaun Rogers! Why couldn't you speak directly to Mangini and tell him you feel disrespected? And tell him if it continues, you will take appropriate actions? Why did you need to be a baby about this?

  6. Mike Says:

No coach should "put on chapstick" for a player. Mangini should however, as Ed said, be more pro-active. There is some truth to what Luke says as well. The mangenius may aspire to be belicheck, but he first better learn where his bread is buttered.

  7. LambBone Says:

Terje is just as big a whiner as Rogers. This is not about Mangini – this is about getting more money. As usual, the anti-Mangini crowd thinks it's his fault when clearly this is Rogers being the head case he's always been.

Question: If the Browns didn't have Rogers what would their record have been? How much worse would the run defense be? Let's face it. They were 4-12. He didn't exactly make a big difference.

  8. Kentucky Bob Says:

Mangini will figure out how to fix his relationship with Rogers. Releasing or trading him would be a salary cap nightmare, that Shaun should understand eventually. The Browns should build around Shaun…and Shaun should focus on creating a relationship with Rob Ryan.

This team needs a shake-up and it's the Captain's job to start, sustain and finish a turn-around, that begins a tradition. No one should be comfortable, this team needs a unifying Navy Seal kind of boot camp. Get on-board and stow the whining.

  9. jusayin Says:

This would not be the only fan to think this is all about what is soon to occur for FA DT Albert Haynesworth. He is reportedly set to sign for something in the neighborhood of $100 mil for six years. Shaun signed last summer for $42 mil over the same period.

    End of story.

  10. mike hulgin Says:

I don't know what the COACH is doing by not accepting Rogers. This guy is a Great Player, ANY TEAM would love to have him on there roster. Get with it COACH, we don't want this guy going anywhere but after a QB !!

  11. Tim Brownfan Says:

This is the chance to clean house! All the crybaby millionaires should be traded for draft picks that includes K2 and Edwards.

  12. Mike Says:

He wasn't happy in Detroit, why would he be happy in Cleveland. As much as you all don't want to admit it, the Browns and Lions are pretty much the same franchise, except for fan support.

  13. terje Says:

lambbone-i agree it's about the cash but mangini was dumb enough to get suckered into roger's excuse. i don't blame rogers though. the organization is a joke. get out now and get some of the haynesworth style money.

  14. Jmaro Says:

justsayin you hit it right on the head. It's the same old story of… I had a great year so my current deal isn't good enough.

Maybe Shaun Rodgers should spend some time as one of the thousands who are unemployed right now and he would change his tune.

If this does happen it is further proof that Randy Lerner needs someone in the role Parcells has in Miami. Get someone in here that knows football and can make personell decisions and Randy can stick to writing the checks.

  15. Daniel Says:

The story I heard was the the two passed each other with neither speaking. I doubt that Mangini even knew who Rodgers was so get over it! Did he get disrespected? Oh well, who cares!!. He gets enough money to play football that the coach shouldn't have to bow down to these Prima Donna's when they meet them for the first time. If he wants to be traded, don't! We need him and I don't care that he likes our head coach. The guy is paid to play a game that he better play with everything he has or maybe the NFL can just blackball him and he can finish his career at Circle K.

  16. Grover Says:

The fact is that nobody can MAKE Rogers play. I would consider trading him but I would in know way release him. I agree with "Tim Brownfan" I would also trade Winslow he has been a complet disapointment. Tim I am not ready to give up on Edwards yet, he deserves one more year.

  17. superdawg67 Says:

That's the problem with these guys today. He doesn't have Grandpa Romeo there to coddle him.You wouldn't hear Casey Hampton whining like his former college teammate. He's a great player no doubt about it but I would trade him to someone like Green Bay or Denver for their first round pick. Both are trying to change over to the 3-4 defense and could use an instant Pro Bowler. It would open some cap space and there are some very good nose tackles in the draft. In fact this draft is loaded with players who fit the 3-4 scheme and the Browns only have four draft picks.Short term loss long term gain.Rogers is going to be 30 yrs old and I would deal him now while his value is high.If this is all true it could be a blessing and could help the browns fill other holes in their roster.Cap space and a high draft pick for someone who doesn't want to be here. The Browns hold all the cards in this deal. We'll see who's bluffing.
