Browns may have interest in Cutler

Posted March 3rd, 2009 by Luke Chandler

File this one under the "rumor" bin, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is posting today that the Browns could be interested in disgruntled Denver Brocnos quarterback Jay Cutler.  Florio notes per a source if a deal goes through (which he even notes as only a possibility), it would involve quarterback Brady Quinn, nose tackle Shaun Rogers, and Denver's third round pick, 79th overall.

We can't take this one too far, as it doesn't have much weight to it, yet.  As Florio notes, the ManKok regime holds their cards close to the vest, so it seems unlikely that they would allow this leak.  Unless T.J. McCreight somehow got ahold of this one (we kid, we kid).

While this one will only play out as a trade in Madden 2010, it's still interesting to speculate on.  Who wouldn't want a high quality quarterback like Cutler?

[...] Even better, Yahoo Sports posted the item with a complete and utter straight face. Then it shows up on the Akron Beacon-Journal. [...]

Merely here to report the rumors, now matter how absurd they may end up being.

Don't lose any sleep over this rumor. Denver is trying to smooth over their problem with Cutler. Trading Rogers and Quinn for Cutler and a third, leaves us with Cutler and D.A. and no Defensive line. Denver only weakens themself trading Cutler. We'd only weaken ourself making this trade.

We'd be better off trading D.A. for a 1st or 2cnd round pick, fixing our problem with Rogers, and letting Edwards redeem himself in his contract year. We can franchise him next off season, and deal with his situation then. We can use the upper round picks to strenthen the team. That makes good sense. I'm counting on Eric and Greg to figure that out.

We need to be patient but move positively. We need change. 4-12 is not what any of us want. I think Brady is a leader… and if given a chance, he'll show us. We need to strengthen our o-line, our running game and our defense behind the d-line… to support Brady. We also need underachieving players to rededicate themselves to doing what they are paid to do… at a higher level.

Better use of Cribbs in the backfield may help. It's time to do it, instead of promising it, as our last Coach did. If we actually used Cribbs, Lewis and Harrison like the Giants used their 3 backs last year, we might be dangerous on offense again.

That may mean taking Cribbs off special teams… and promoting him. The challenge would be good for him. Replacing him on Special teams will be a challenge, but our Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams guru… should be up to this task.

Good luck Browns! Go to work.
