Just what should the Browns get for Edwards?

Posted April 8th, 2009 by Dan

It seems that the buzz is again growing about the Browns possibly moving Braylon Edwards to the New York Giants for draft picks.

Initially everyone heard the trade the Browns wanted was New York's second- and fifth-round picks and young wide receiver Steve Smith. The Giants countered with the first, third and either Domenik Hixon or Mario Manningham. As the story goes, the Browns rebuffed that deal.

Now there is some word out that the Browns wanted New York's first- and third-round selections. And why not? Dallas trade a first, third and sixth for Detroit's Roy Williams and a seventh-round pick.

The Giants are seemingly real players in a trade for a wide receiver after releasing self-shooter Plaxico Burress. The team has 10 draft picks and made several key offseason acquisitions so it's unlikely 10 rookies will make the team.

Still, a first and third is probably still too steep for the Giants. So, we ask you, what is a fair price for Braylon Edwards? Not necessarily what you would take for Edwards, but what you think the Browns will take.

Update: The Newark Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo is shooting down the latest rumor. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see something happen.

I think as the draft gets closer, and the Giants do not come up with a viable alternative (Ocho), they will give the 1 and 3. Although BE is very inconsistent and a prima dona, he is an angel compared to Plaxico. And, since most receivers take a year or two to mature football wise, and the Giants window of opportunity is NOW, they will spend a 1 and 3 to get their wr now. These Giant picks are low picks (at least the 1 rounder is). The issue is will the Giants be able to lock BE down to a long term contract when he thinks he is so much better than he has played. If that happens, this deal will go down for a 1 and 3. I think the Browns will take that. I personally hope it is a 1,3 and a receiver. We need bodies. Hixon is a nice slot receiver and a home town guy. Then we need to grab Robiskie. He is not as good as BE could be, but he runs precise routes and catches the ball. He is a young Joe J, #84, and every qb needs one of these. Then we sign Holt to give us his last 2 or 3 good years. Then either draft with 2nd 2nd round pick another wr if that person is worth it, or that will be a priority next year, depending on who is available. . . to get a monster wr.

My picks. . .if we do not trade down are DE/OLB hybrid with 1st pick. Robiskie with first of 2nd round picks. Then best player available of the wr/rb/safety with the 2nd of the two second pics. After that, best player available.

    Take a 2nd, 3rd and a 4th. We need the picks.

I would be open to just about anything that involves a 1st, another pick and a body (Hixon).

I am holding out hope we deal the 5th…perhaps to Denver for 12 and 18 if they really want Sanchez.

    The 12th (Maclin), 18th (Maualuga), 29th (Wells/Moreno), 36th (Mack), 50th (Michael Johnson -GT)

This would be a total coup…with several quality picks remaining…

would be a great way to get an impact DE, RB, LB, WR and C

Braylon's value is at least an "average" #1 and #3 (middle of the round). I consider the Giant's 1st pick to be below average (29th pick), that's only 8 picks before our 2nd round pick. So, if the trade is with the Giants, I'd demand their #1 (29th) and #2 (60th) and Hixon (no more wolverines that can't catch). FYI, they also have the 45th pick.

This would give the Browns the 5th, 29th, 26th, 50th, and 60th picks. Then you can rebuild correctly (assuming they know what they're doing, which I feel they do). Here would be my targets: Crabtree/Maclin (5th), LB/Moreno (29th), then defence for the rest of the weekend. We could also have sufficient ammo to move up a couple slots if we want, but I wouldn't do it.
