Live blog this Sunday

Friday, November 21st, 2008

We'll once again be holding a live blog for the Browns game on Sunday. With the game set to start at 1 p.m. against the Texans, the live blog will go live at about 12:45. Stop by, give a prediction and hang around as we cheer on the Browns.

What, you were looking for Phil Savage talk? OK, here goes:

- It was stupid
- He should not be fired
- He should be fined
- Admit it, you've said worse to your detractors

Brady Quinn's broken fingertip is more concerning than Savage dropping an F-bomb.

What they're saying today

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

- Akron Beacon Journal (Marla Ridenour): McDonald deals with demotion

- Akron Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Calm, quiet kicker lets feet do talking

- Buffalo News (Jerry Sullivan): Free fall from grace starts with quarterback

- Chronicle Telegram
(Scott Petrak): Dawson keeps getting better with age

- Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Far from flawless, Quinn still gave a sense of poise to Browns offense in victory

- Plain Dealer (Dennis Manoloff): Edwards makes an impact

- Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (Leo Roth): Buffalo Bills turned to Lynch too late

- What I'm saying today: The Browns tried their best to lose, but still managed to win. Hooray!

Brady Quinn was kind of average, outside of late in the game. Good enough.

Braylon Edwards was the best player on the field last night. What is this, 2007? Oh, wait, Phil Dawson was actually the best player out there.

Apparently the Browns players forgot how to tackle sometime between the first and second quarter and never figured out how to do it again. It has to be time Andra Davis sits on the bench.

Browns at Bills live game blog

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Tonight's blog is set to go live at 8. If you're here a little early, there are some glass-half-full factoids below the live blog.

Buffalo has lost three consecutive games, all against teams that run a 3-4 defense, similar to that of the Browns.

Did you know the teams that have beat the Browns have a combined record of 37-23, aka, a winning percentage of 62?

D'Qwell Jackson needs just three tackles today to take the league lead from San Francisco's Patrick Willis.

Running back Jamal Lewis rushed for 789 yards over the final seven games of last year. Should he do that again this year, he'd finish the season with 1,382 yards rushing. Last year, he had 1,304 yards.

In four games in college, Bills quarterback Trent Edwards, playing for Stanford, never beat Brady Quinn, playing for Notre Dame.

In his first career start, Quinn completed 65.7 percent of his passes. Derek Anderson only topped the 60 percent mark twice this season, throwing for 62.5 and 62.1 percent against the Bengals and Giants, respectfully.

Live game blog tonight

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Make sure to join us for tonight's live game blog, starting shortly before kickoff.

A few quick news bites:

- Shaun Rogers and Eric Steinbach are listed as questionable for tonight's game. My uniformed guess is that Rogers will play and Steinbach won't. Both have rib injuries. Corey Williams, Darnell Dinkins and Steve Heiden are also questionable. Lawrence Vickers is doubtful. Jamal Lewis and Eric Wright are probable.

- For the Bills, the biggest news is that defensive end Aaron Schoebel is out, receiver Josh Reed is doubtful and receiver James Hardy is questionable. Their other injuries are minor.

- Given that the weather in Buffalo tonight is supposed to be pretty bad and both of these teams have been inconsistent all year, this one will either be really ugly or really entertaining. Don't expect a blizzard like the matchup last year in Cleveland, but high winds and cold are expected.

- Quick stats: On defense Buffalo allows 21 points per game (13th in the NFL) and 309.1 total yards (15th). On offense, they score 21.3 a game (21st) and average 304.1 (24th) total yards a game.

- Make sure to read Marla Ridenour's five things to watch story here for additional insight into tonight's game.

- Think the Browns have the best fans in the NFL? Bills fans might disagree.

Prediction: Browns 13, Bills 10

What they're saying today

Friday, November 7th, 2008

- Akron Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Quarterback can't win game all by himself

- Canton Repository (Steve Doerschuk): No miracle finish for Browns, Quinn

- Denver Post (Jim Armstrong): Browns keep reverting to form

- Denver Post (Woody Paige): Cutler's courage torments Brownies

- Plain Dealer (May Kay Cabot): Bright start for Winslow ends bleakly with fourth-quarter errors

- Plain Dealer
(Bud Shaw): Quinn's impressive debut can't overcome another example of '08 Browns failure

- Rocky Mountain News (Bernie Linicome): Weapons extinguished, Cutler fired up

What I'm saying today:
There is a lot more to life than football. However, when you look to football to give a release from the garbage, it's far too frustrating to be a Browns fan.

Brady Quinn looked good, I guess. I wasn't as hot about his play as everyone else. Maybe more on that over the next few days. The defense, though, has become a real problem. It's especially troublesome to see Brandon McDonald just getting scorched out there.

What they're saying today

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Akron Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Team's total collapse spells doom for season

Akron Beacon Journal (Marla Ridenour): Cribbs breaks through for Browns

Baltimore Sun (Mike Preston): With Flacco and Rice, futures market already bringing return

Baltimore Sun (David Steele): Pep talk from Lewis provides big lift

Columbus Dispatch (Bob Hunter): Browns don't seem to get what 3-5 means

Examiner.com (Andrew Calafato): The culture of mediocrity, your 2008 Cleveland Browns

Plain Dealer (Mary Kay Cabot): Teammates try to shrug off Edwards' fourth-quarter drop

Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Browns have made it clear: This is not their year

What I'm saying today:
This was a tough one. In the third quarter, it seemed there was no way the Browns would lose. And they did.

It's weird how your opinion can swing so drastically from a win to a loss. The only problem is, the Browns are getting to a point where even if they win, the hope doesn't grow. But if they continue to lose, your opinion does get more and more sour.

Can the Browns go on some kind of winning streak? Yes, because at times the offense looks electric. But the problem now, at 3-5, the team might be too far out of it to bother.

Fortunately, there is another game on Thursday against the Broncos. I'll be live blogging again, so make sure to stop by.

Is a 7-2 finish possible?

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Given the nature of the AFC, where only the Bengals, Chiefs and Raiders are really the only teams out of it, it will probably take a 10-6 record to make it as a wild card team this year. And that would be luck.

Here's a look at the final nine games of the season for the Browns and some predictions.

Game: Nov. 2 – vs. Baltimore (4-3)
If the Browns want to try and make a serious playoff push, this is an absolute must win. The Ravens beat the Browns 28-10 on Sept. 21 and have won the last two games in a row. They do have a rookie quarterback who is only average, but a very good defense that matches up well against the Browns. The Browns looked pretty good Sunday and above average for parts of the Washington game. Stop the run, stop the Ravens.
Prediction: Win

Game: Nov. 6 – vs. Denver (4-3)
Another team just ahead of the Browns, Denver has lost its last two games. Quarterback Jay Cutler has been pretty bad lately after a hot start and their running game isn't very good. They do have some pieces that can negate the Browns' assets (namely, cornerback Champ Bailey). Sure, the Browns will be coming in on short rest, but so will Denver. Fortunately, Cleveland plays this one at home.
Prediction: Win

Game: Nov. 17 – at Buffalo (5-2)
The Bills have been one of the better teams this season, thanks in large part to quarterback Trent Edwards. To me, this is the Browns best rivalry game outside of the division. When these two teams face each other, it's memorable. Remember last year's blizzard bowl? Or the fights in training camp scrimmages?
Prediction: Loss – Buffalo is real good

Game: Nov. 23 – vs. Houston (3-4)
Come on. Houston isn't that good. If the Browns shut down Andre Johnson, they shut down Houston.
Prediction: Win (we're at 6-5 now folks)

Game: Nov. 30 – vs. Indianapolis (3-4)
If you have watched the Colts this year, it's clear that they just don't have it this year. It's conceivable that if they lose a few more game leading up to this one, Peyton Manning could be shut down for the year. He won't admit it, but he's hurt. They can't run the ball at all, which plays right into the hands of the Browns.
Prediction: Win (this is where Browns fans really start to get excited)

Game: Dec. 7 – at Tennessee (7-0)
Oh my. Tennessee is considered to have the best defense in pro football. They'll have more than a week off to prepare for the Browns. They run the ball well, which gives the Browns problems. But! They have been very prone to give up a lot of yards to tight ends. Who has arguably the best tight ends in football? The Browns! That's right folks…
Prediction: Win!

Game: Dec. 15 – at Philadelphia (4-3)
Outside of beating Pittsburgh 15-7, Philadelphia really has no other good victories this year. They don't run the ball especially well and quarterback Donovan McNabb will probably get hurt before this game. (Oh, come on, he gets hurt like every year) Also helping the Browns: I will have a friend in Philly cheering them on (and likely getting his face beaten in). Still, that Philly defense will give Derek Anderson a lot of problems. But not enough!
Prediction: Win (we're at 9-5 now)

Game: Dec. 21 – vs. Cincinnati (0-8)
Last year, the Bengals pretty much knocked Cleveland out of the playoffs. The Browns won't let that happen again. Also, Cincinnati sucks.
Prediction: Win (10-5!)

Game: Dec. 28 – at Pittsburgh (5-2)
Nothing like a road rivalry game to end the season. The way Pittsburgh is playing, they may have already clinched the division at this point. That could mean they're resting their starters (except devilish James Harrison who seems to always be in the game).
Prediction: Win!

Wait. Wait. Wait. Last week, I said the Browns don't make the playoffs. This week, I say they're going 11-5, finishing the season a miraculous 11-2? What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here? Did Sunday's performance, which was really only good in the first half, get to me that much?

More than likely, the Browns will lose that game to Tennessee. That knocks them down to 10-6. The Steelers players their backups is a huge assumption. That knocks them down to 9-7. The Denver game is especially hard to predict because they run so hot and so cold. That could knock them down to 8-8. I don't think it will be worse than that, though.

Clearly, though, the first five games here are the most important. They're all against AFC teams right in the middle of it. And the Browns have four of them at home. Winning four games in that stretch and being 7-5 heading into the final stretch is crucial.

But what does this post really prove? That being a Browns fan is enough to drive you crazy. What do you think? Leave your prediction in the comments or just call me a big dummy.

What they're saying today

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

-Akron Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Win could lead to bigger, better things
-Columbus Dispatch (Bill Rabinowitz): Pushovers no more
-New York Post (Paul Schwartz): Blunder-ful defeat ends pursuit of perfection
-New York Post (Steve Serby): Eli & Co. blue it big in Cleveland
-New York Times (Jonathan Abrams): Giants Doomed by a lost connection
-Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Scribbles following Browns game
-Plain Dealer (Bud Shaw): Swagger indeed

What I'm saying today: First, thanks to everyone who stopped by for the live blog. It was a lot of fun.

The game was certainly entertaining, but the final score is deceiving. Still, Derek Anderson looked good, Braylon Edwards made a lot of big plays and Jamal Lewis was running hard. I'll have more thoughts throughout the week and Luke may as well.
