Ok, seriously. It’s “The University of Akron” not Akron U, it never has been. UofA is perfectly fine, U of Akron, it’s ok too. But not Akron U. I appreciate the need to shorten the name for space, but I detest the complete disregard for what the official name of the university is.
The last time I checked, it was the The University of Akron and has been for nearly 5 decades!
Thanks for catching that.
I get the same grief here in Ottawa. I seem to be always reminding people that it is the University of Ottawa, and NOT “Ottawa U”. The same way it is the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, the University of Washington, the University of Montreal, University of Manitoba, and the University of British Columbia, NOT “Michigan U”, “Minnesota U”, etc.
Call me a fuddy-duddy (go on, it’s easy and free! there, don’t you feel better now?), but when “hip” colloquialisms that pretend to be efficient eclipse tradition that took decades to establish, something is wrong with the picture.
That aside, the talk is exactly the sort of thing that I find fascinating. Sorry I can’t be there today.
