New basketball recruit got OVI in August

by Jonas Fortune on October 29, 2008

in Basketball

More not so flattering news coming out of Kent State today as another men's basketball player has recently been in trouble with the law.

It had not been reported that junior Frank Henry-Ala was charged August 16 — fifteen days before Chris Singletary's resisting arrest charge — for operating a vehicle under the influence and lane violations, according to Portage County records.

He was pulled over on Interstate 76 for a marked lanes violation at 2:06 a.m. When given a breathalyzer test Henry-Ala registered a .083, according to the State High Way Patrol. The legal limit is .08.

He pleaded not guilty Aug. 21 and is set for another hearing Dec. 9.

Henry-Ala is a new addition to the Kent State team this season. The Pasadena, Calif. native spent last year with new assistant coach Bobby Steinburg at Motlow Community College in Tennessee.

While at Motlow last year he was also the teammate of junior guard Tyree Evans, who is a walk-on guard this season at KSU.

Typical KSU garbage. Let me guess, he'll get suspended for the preseason game against Nowhere State and maybe run a couple extra laps.

What do you expect from a program that harbors convicted felons and rapists and drug dealers?

Notice a trend?

Win at all costs?

Andy@KSU October 29, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Roo Town sounds like a campaign attack ad. Uses plural expressions & ambiguous terms when when there is only one (statutory) rape/drug dealing player on the team. This player isnt even on scholarship.
I would expect this type of venom from a fan of a program that hasnt been to the big dance since Ronald Reagan was president.

fred October 29, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Roo Town is a bitter man. However, there IS an unsettling trend here……. Roo town is correct. Notice to KSU………… get ahold of the problem(s) immediately! P.S. Go Kent!

RooTown October 29, 2008 at 8:05 pm

(statutory) rape?

By enclosing statutory in parenthesis, does that somehow lessen the attack?

You KSU fans are delusional. As long as you are beating up on the Blind Sister's of the Poor and winning your 20 games you are happy. It doesn't matter that your players aren't real students and they are out smoking pot outside the Akron clubs on weekends. That's not a rumor either.

Maybe now that they have a full-fledged drug dealer on the team they won't have to come to my neck of the woods to get their fix.

But don't worry, Tyree Evans is only a walk-on. There's no risk involved for KSU.

By the way, how does a poor kid from the ghetto afford out of state tuition? Jonas Fortune–maybe you should look into that.

RooTown October 29, 2008 at 8:11 pm

To add to my comments above regarding why the KSU players spend their free time in Akron:

"He was pulled over on Interstate 76 for a marked lanes violation at 2:06 a.m."

Why do you think he was traveling on I-76 at 2:06 a.m.?

FlashFan October 29, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Typical Roo….difference between our guy and your is that he didn't SHOOT AT THE POLICEMAN WHEN HE GOT PULLED OVER. Checkmate.

RooTown October 29, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Checkmate?

The real difference between "our" guy and "your" guy…our guy is no longer on the team. How's that for accountability?

FlashFan October 29, 2008 at 9:52 pm

Yeah, it's a pretty rare prison that gives day passes so you can play basketball.

RooTown October 29, 2008 at 10:02 pm

It worked for Tyree Evans.

fred October 29, 2008 at 11:34 pm

To the Akron fans on this blog………..get a grip will ya! Kent has done everything the right way for ten years. Does Kent have a potential problem? Yes. But I am not going to question at this moment the program. The Akron people on this blog are showing their jealousy and envy over the success of Kent`s program during the past ten years. I`ll say something that you Akron fans can understand. You want some crackers with your whine? Nah-Nah -Nah-Nah-Nah-NAAAHHH!

fred October 29, 2008 at 11:58 pm

I know………. Akron fans are….are….are….are……..REPUBLICANS!!!!!

FlashFan October 30, 2008 at 1:10 am

Yeah, they spend more time on our blogs than most of us do, and when they don't have anything semi-intelligent to say they try to claim some sort of moral high ground they've deluded themselves into thinking they have. I could start naming some names….Bosley comes to mind right off if you want to talk about recruiting players with "issues," but it's a waste of time with them. Fact of the matter is you'll never convince me that if Evans had landed on their doorstep, they wouldn't have done the same. So we'll have to put up with their misspelled signs for a couple of years and keep beating the tar out of them! (Now's comes the part where they say "we beat you 3 times two years ago and we say something about a blind squirrel!)

Zipsfan October 30, 2008 at 10:15 am

This is a very sad story, not just for Kent State, but for the conference as well. The MAC needs to build their fanbase and Kent State continues to have headlines for more arrests and bringing in troubled athletes. I assume that Kent State will do nothing about the matter considering it already happened in August and nothing was said. I can appreciate the success Kent State has had in the past but any success this season will be very tainted. There are several athletes on your basketball team who would not be playing on any other MAC squad.

hightower October 30, 2008 at 11:20 am

RooTown get a life! How about those football scholarships you lost? Talk about a powder puff schedule, who does Akron BB play? You coach got fired from his previous job because he is a racist.

Zipsfan October 30, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Hightower you are way over the line. Scholarships lost in football dealt with an APR score that takes into account retention of players. JD felt a change was necessary to move the program forward. He let players go for the betterment of the team. Dambrot is an outstanding coach and a better person. His program has been a class act and to bring up an event that happened 20 years ago is in the past. Keep the conversation within the context of what is happening. Kent State has an issue with their men's basketball team being out of control. They are doing your university a disservice. Don't you think your coach and AD owe your university better?

Bubba October 30, 2008 at 2:08 pm

If using the word N***** makes one a racist then I guess most of the people at the Obama rally/Jay-Z concert are racists.

BU/BG/OU/MU Fan October 30, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Both of your school's stupidity makes the MAC look bad. I love when Kent and Akron fans argue. Its like watching a bunch of gorillas fling turds at each other.

fred October 30, 2008 at 6:24 pm

It`s way to early to be worried about the MAC fan base. The MAC has always been a blip on the radar for fans in Ohio. If it ain`t Ohio State it ain`t important. Unfortunately for the MAC it has been and will be an uphill battle for respect in the sports world in Ohio. That is unfortunate. The MAC puts out top flight sports teams every year in all sports. But, again, if it ain`t OSU, forget it! That`s why so many people love it when a MAC team beats OHIO State in ANYTHING.

fred October 30, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Hey BU/BG/OU/MU, what do all those letters mean? If we`re so stupid why are you reading our nonsense?

dan October 31, 2008 at 1:40 pm

as far as the KD thing goes he asked his players if it would be fine if he used that word. they said yes he used it and one kid was mad at him for something else and decided to play the race card. to claim KD is a racist is to know nothing of the story.
Kent has done nothing the right way. the bring in gangsters and low life’s in order to win a game. Akron is doing their best to bring in quality students and when our student athletes screw up they don't get a simple slap on the wrist if you need proof of that just look at our women’s B-Ball team

JT October 31, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Hey Dano,

Akron football gives a guy a second chance, and Kent does the same thing for a basketball player. Akron player shoots at cop, Kent player has DUI. Yet Kent is doing "nothing the right way" and Akron does their "best to bring in quallity students"?

Hypocrisy 101. Is that a required course at Akron?

fred October 31, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Hey Dano, The last time I checked Kent has been in NO trouble with the NCAA. Antonio Gates WAS a problem before he got to Kent. Josh Cribbs got caught with pot and came from inner D.C. I could go on. Until you walk through some of the same things as many of these players do…..shut up! Kennedy has a very short leash with some of these "problem players". Kent has run a clean program for years. So, as Hawaii 5-0 says, book`em Dano!

dan October 31, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Akrons football team gives a guy a second chance. Kents basketball team gives a guy a 3rd,4th,5th ect. ect.
the guy who shot at cops was a walk on and is no longer on the team. you see we will give out the same second chance that all other mid majors give out but thats about it. after you get arrested for something like DUI or resisting arrest or BOTH your gone. but at Kent that stuff is just another day in the life

dan October 31, 2008 at 5:02 pm

and as far as my knowledge goes the player who shot at the cops had no previous record to indicate that he might do something so extreme and horrible

dan October 31, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Fred, I'm not saying that you should never give a guy a second chance I'm just saying the 3rd 4th and 5th shots Kent's handing out is crazy.
and Cribbs coming from inner DC means nothing.

fred October 31, 2008 at 8:58 pm

So far Kent giving some players third and fourth chances has worked out just fine. That shows me Kennedy has done A LOT of homework before deciding to welcome these players to campus. Kennedy is extremely sharp. And, have you been through inner D.C? I have, and it ain`t pretty. Sometimes the only thing these players have to hold on to is sports. If am not mistaken Kennedy told Gates, " this is it young man, you screw up just one time, you`re out." I am not going to question what Kent is doing. If Kent screws up, the University will suffer. Go Kent!

Blain November 1, 2008 at 9:27 am

This is silly…People writing on this blog are way off base when they claim KSU mens hoops is full of thugs, felons and bad seeds. Outside of Tyree Evans, no current KSU BB player has done anything that many other schools would throw them off the team for. Singleterry is at that point now and he knows it. He's had a DUI and a citation for driving w/o a license. Serious stuff for the young mans personal development but not real serious from a strictly legal standpoint. For the naysayers, with what Chris has done wrong so far, what school would have thrown him off the their team by now? Akron? I doubt it.

As for all other the other KSU players, Henry-Ala's recent DUI arrest is all I'm aware of and this is the 1st problem he's ever had (blowing a .83…I'm surprised he didn't get a warning being that close to the limit). That totals 1 guy with a truly troubled past and 1 player who's on the brink. Hardly a team of fellons…

Lets move on.

Dunbar November 1, 2008 at 1:04 pm

And let's not forget that the last time Evans was in trouble was three years ago this month. Three years ago. He owes nothing to society. How much and how long do you punish him for? He is a walk-on with a short lease. Those that say he should not be on the basketball team, would you say the same if he wanted to join the chess team? The marching band?

Kevin Anderston November 1, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Who the fuck cares… the only reason that this comes to light is because this guy has nothing better to do with his time other than checking the past public records to get dirt on the KSU players… like he has a vendetta against this team. I think i might check the public records for Akron, BG, Ohio and find how many athletes are convicted felons…

This blog is trash…

FlashFan November 2, 2008 at 2:42 pm

I don't know who's writing this blog but its time to put something new up. Notice we had a football game yesterday?

FlashFan November 2, 2008 at 2:46 pm

….or that the coach of the volleyball team has apparently thrown in the towel this year and we're tanking what started out as a promising season? Or that field hockey won the MAC? Something…anything? Or do we want to make sure to leave a .83 OVI up long enough so as to humiliate the kid as long as humanly possible???

hoveytheflash November 3, 2008 at 5:50 pm

FlashFan…i think you need to take a cold shower or something. Jonas is a student who is a correspondent for the Beacon. It's not his full-time job to be a reporter and write about the entire KSU sports program. He's a senior in his last semester – take a chill man.

Realism November 3, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Zipsfan is going off the deep end again. Attacking Kent for a player blowing 2 sips of a wine cooler over the legal limit while ignoring the cop-shooting Akron thugs. Ohh, and in what way is Evans any worse than your boy Torrence? I guess the big difference is that Kent didn't recruit Evans, nor did they give him a scholarship. Wish JD could say the same, huh?

As for out-of-state tuition…you ever heard of student loans? Evans was ranked ahead of Rajon Rondo…he still has a shot to go to the NBA and pay any loans off in a the next couple years.

The bottom line is this, Zipsfan: we'll keep winning 20 games a season by beating teams like Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Pittsburgh, St. Mary's on national TV, and, oh yeah…Akron three times a year. You might not remember us beating some of these teams…maybe you were still in junior high, which would also explain you conveniently forgetting Tarver and Hollingsworth, a couple drug-convicted pillars of class that played basketball at Akron.

As for weak schedules, maybe you should take a look at yours. You could win 29 games a season most years and still not get an at-large because the Zips play an out-of-conference schedule weaker than St. Vincent St. Mary's.

Take your win over us in football (the highlight of your year), and your soccer team (is that still an American sport?), and we'll continue to win Reese and Jacoby cups and have better academic ratings than your tier 4 ghetto…err, school…

Flash77 November 4, 2008 at 4:15 pm

It does make you wonder, would Gary Waters bring in a roster like the current KSU squad?

Flasher91 November 5, 2008 at 5:45 pm

What stupidity. First, if you think we recruit criminals you show your jealousy through your ignorance. Second, Laing Kennedy sits on the NCAA tournament selection committee and a couple of years ago won an award for AD excellence with the TX and FLA AD's. He is VERY well respected nationally and has made our program the standard of excellence in the MAC. Lastly, if you were truly concerned for the MAC as a conference when you were not playing KSU or needing a KSU loss for your own benefit, you would be cheering for us to represent the MAC win wins and by making noise. A true ambassador for the MAC would do that. F the ROO !

ee08 November 5, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Simpson/Evans held out of scrimmage. David Carducci reports it's due to clearinghouse issues. Of course. It couldn't be anything related to the odor coming from Simpson's car and the cloud of smoke out Evans window just before practice. Ask Geno since he was first on the scene.

i met frank after his arrest at the kent rec center and i am a big akron fan but frank is one of the most dedicated people you will ever meet. even before he came to kent he worked with charities and did a ton of volunteer work. he is also part of a fundraising group who raised over $50 million dollars for kids in Africa. the money built them basketball courts and recreational centers. which helps keep the kids involved with sports and not violence or worse. he was his high school salutitorian and upheld those grades into college. this young man has accomplished more in his 21 years of life than yours entirely ROO TOWN. And Tyree Evans is completely changed person. he has done nothing wrong to anyone for a very long time. as for the past. you were young once. thou shalt not judge. espescially in complete ignorance. don't believe everything you read sir…..!

Bob in Solon March 9, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Roo Fans make me laugh.

Keith Dambrot has (easily) the DIRTIEST record of any coach in the MAC…
(this year or ANY year).

Programs reflect the personality (and character) of the Coach.

Can you spell L-O-S-E-R ???!!!

Hint to Akron – lose the metallic gold glitter.. trying to emulate Notre Dame brings back images of GERRY FAUST (speaking of LOSERS).

Go Flashes !!!
