Boston College coach Frank Spaziani talked to the media this morning as part of the ACC football coaches teleconference and NewsFlashes was listening in. Kent State visits Boston College for a 2P.M. kickoff on Saturday.
“First of all we were very excited, obviously, to start off with a victory, getting your first victory is always the hardest one. I don’t mean myself personally, I mean football teams.”
“So to get that, we were excited. We also got to play a lot of people. We got to get a better handle on this young football team…where we have to improve and what we have to do to go forward, and with that we’re looking forward to playing the Kent State Flashes and find out a little bit more about our team.”
“They have a veteran squad and they’re coming in here. We played them last year…a tough game and we’re looking for a big challenge.”
What did you learn about your QB’s in Game 1?
“Well we got to see them play under fire and they made some plays, they were a little bit more advanced and they had been in the scrimmages. No one separated themselves from each other but we got a little better feel of how they would handle themselves when the opposition was coming at them for real.”
How do you approach the position this week?
“Status quo, much the same. We obviously have to get ourselves solidified there and that’s the way we’re approaching it this week.”
How you rate your offensive line this year, and in particular, Matt Tennant at center?
“We don’t have a lot of depth on the offensive line just like at a lot of other positions, but we feel we have five guys that we can win with and we’re trying to develop some depth there. Matt is obviously our captain. He has stepped up and had a real good preseason. He played well last week and we’re looking forward to finding out if he can improve as the competition increases here.”
Where are you looking for the big improvement between weeks 1 and 2?
“We have such a young football team and a lot of inexperience that there is a lot of areas for us to improve. We have got to improve at quarterback and linebacker but we are inexperienced in a lot of areas so we have to get better.”
On Montel Harris, RB
“Montel anchors the duty with Josh (Haden) and we feel both of them are good enough to win with. Montel picked up where he left off but once again the competition is going to pick up here and we need him to play well for us to have any kind of chance this year so hopefully he can hold on to the ball…he dropped it twice last week so we’re not too excited about that so there’s an area he needs to improve on and has to get better at.”
