Election Day basics

• The Ohio primary election is Tuesday. Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. If you are still standing in line at your polling location at 7:30 p.m., poll workers must give you the opportunity to vote.

• If you don't know where to vote, call your county election board today. You can call on Election Day, but it will be harder to get through.

Summit: 330-643-5200.
Portage: 330-297-3511.
Wayne: 330-287-5480.
Stark: 330-451-8683.
Medina: 330-722-9278.

• Under Ohio law, a person's political party affiliation is determined by choosing to vote a party ballot at a partisan primary election. Voters may choose one of three ballots: Democrat, Republican or issues only.

• Voters in Summit County will vote using optical scan cards. Voters in Medina, Wayne, Stark and Portage counties will use touch-screen machines, but may ask for paper ballots.

• Voters must bring identification to the polls. Identification may include: a current and valid photo identification, such as a driver's license; or military identification that shows the voter's name and current address; or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck; or a government document showing the voter's name and current address. The voter registration notification card issued by the board of elections is not proper identification.

• Voters who do not provide one of these forms of identification will still be able to cast a provisional ballot by providing the last four digits of their Social Security number. Voters who do not have any of the above forms of identification, including Social Security number, can cast a provisional ballot by signing an affirmation swearing to their identity.
