Hospital orderly, radio talk show host, lecturer, media consultant, TV reporter, copy editor at the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Wall Street Journal

Political career:
1970-75, 1981-82 Cleveland City Council member

1976-77 Clerk of courts for the Cleveland Municipal Court

1977-79 Cleveland mayor; elected at age 31, was youngest person to lead a major U.S. city

1994-96 Ohio state senator

1997-present U.S. Congress

Views:
Iraq: Withdraw all U.S. troops. Convene regional conference under U.N. Create international peacekeeping force.

Economy: Public sector has “moral responsibility” to provide jobs. Supports massive public works initiative to rebuild cities, schools, parks, infrastructure and utilities.

Health Care: Backs “enhanced Medicare for everyone” or “public-financed health care privately delivered.”

Immigration: Give illegal immigrants a clear path to legal status. Would legalize permanent residence status for any immigrant here five years.

Taxes: Repeal tax cuts for the wealthy to help pay for higher education. Expand the child tax credit. Simplify the tax Code.

Global Warming: Support Kyoto treaty. Join international efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Energy: Double energy from renewable sources by 2010. Spur research into alternative energy.
